THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
Celebrating 60 years in December, 2008.

2008 marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Sixty years ago countries around the globe joined together to recognise that ensuring every person's rights was the key to founding freedom, justice and peace in the world.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which confirms the acceptance of 30 rights, was adopted by UN member states on 10 December 1948. This action by governments today embodies the common goal of people everywhere - to make human rights a reality for all.

It is hard to believe that this move to enshrine human rights doctrine in international legal frameworks only came about in 1948, with people around the world determining the atrocities of World War II would never be repeated.

Today the Guinness Book of Records describes the UDHR as the "Most Translated Document" in the world.

Amnesty International will be holding events around the world to mark this occasion.

Every single person has rights - that is the essence of our humanity. Each of us has the duty to stand up, not just for our own rights, but also for those of others.

Each year the HOMEBAKE music and arts festival embraces a number of charities and causes.
This year we will be highlighting the work of Amnesty International.

Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who promote and defend human rights. It has over 2.2 million members in more than 150 countries.

Amnesty International believes human rights abuses anywhere are the concern of people everywhere.  Outraged by human rights abuses but inspired by hope for a better world,

Amnesty International works to improve people's lives through campaigning and international solidarity. Its mission is to conduct research and generate action to prevent and
end grave abuses of human rights and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated.  Its members and supporters exert influence on governments, political bodies,
companies and intergovernmental groups.

Activists take up human rights issues by mobilising public pressure through mass demonstrations, vigils and direct lobbying as well as online and offline campaigning.

Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1977 for "having contributed to securing the ground for freedom, for justice, and thereby also for peace in the world".
