Poster for THE SQUARE (2008)

Kieran's partners in crime at Bluetongue Films are none other than those famous Edgerton Brothers, Joel & Nash (both of whom have provided
invaluable assistance to our Homebake Cinema tent since it's inception).

They have just completed their first major (and epic) film, THE SQUARE which is release in cinemas across Australia now. Do yourselves a favour and make sure you see this brilliant Australian film.

HOMEBAKE CINEMA TENT
SEE BELOW FOR FULL HOMEBAKE 2008 CINEMA PAVILION FILM SCHEDULE

We started it in 2001, and although it's now much bigger & better, we still have to admit that we aren't of the calibre of some of Australia's finest film Festivals: such as the very auspicious Tropfest! However we here at Homebake HQ now venture in to our seventh year of promoting upcoming producers and directors via our now (in)famous, yet cosy, Cinema Tent.

Initially conceived courtesy of inspiration provided by Homebake's first ever 'real life' starring role in the Alex Proyas film, 'Garage Days' (filmed at Homebake 2001), we are proud to support burgeoning up & coming local producers, directors and future stars.

Incidentally, you can read more about 'Garage Days' here.

Devoting to exposing the talents of our local young film makers, this tent is put together by a rather famous writer / director / actor / composer (& all round good guy) known widely in film circles, & also being our friend and film devotee, Kieran Darcy-Smith. 2008 will see Kieran (together with his Bluetongue Film Production cohorts) present an array of fine new feature short films. Stay tuned for full programing details.

For those of you not in the know, please read on for a short biography of Kieran's illustrious career.

KIERAN DARCY-SMITH writer / director / actor / composer (Bluetongue Films)

In 1995 Kieran was awarded the inaugural Australian Writers Guild and NSW Film And Television Office Mentorship Scheme Award for his first feature film screenplay 'Little Sky Cambodia'. The same year he wrote, co-produced, co-directed, scored and starred in his first short film, 'Loaded', and established (with Nash and Joel Edgerton) Blue-Tongue Films. 'Loaded', completed for only $570 (garnering it the award for 'Most Resourceful Production', Flickerfest '96) immediately generated very real industry and media interest in the group and has since led to a string of successful and celebrated short films and music videos, numerous industry and festival Awards, continued mainstream press and development and production support from the Australian Film Commission and The NSW Film and Television Office.

In 1998 Kieran co-wrote, co-produced, co-directed, scored and starred in 'Bloodlock' (produced by Blue-Tongue Films with assistance from the AFC and NSWFTO). The gritty half hour action drama took the award for 'Best Film' at the 1999 St Kilda Film Festival, long seen as Australia's premiere competitive short film festival. More Awards were to follow, including the 'Audience Choice Award for Best Film' at Flickerfest '99 and a 1999 AFI (Australian Film Institute) nomination. The film has been selected and screened at Festivals: all over the world.

In 2000 Kieran's third film, 'The Island', (Blue-Tongue Films and Scorpio Media, with assistance from the AFC) was selected to open both the St Kilda Film Festival and Sydney's Tropfest (where it was awarded the 'Tropicana Award'), arguably Australia's two premier short film events. Again, this film has screened at Festivals: all over the world.

Music videos and photography by Kieran Darcy-Smith have led to collaborations with some of Australia's top mainstream and independent artists, including: Alex Lloyd, Kasey Chambers, You Am I, Amiel, Shane Nicholson and Troy Cassar-Daley.

As an actor, Kieran's feature film roles include 'September', 'Two Hands', 'The Cave' (for Sony Screengems USA) and most recently 'The Square'. He played series regular 'Garry' in the FOX-TV1 hit 'Dangerous' and has appeared in leading guest roles on most Australian television dramas, including 'McLeod's Daughters', 'Blue Heelers', 'All Saints', 'Water Rats', 'Wildside', 'Murder Call', 'Always Greener', 'Young Lions', 'White Collar Blue' and 'Stupid, Stupid Man'. Kieran has also appeared in leading roles in a number of award-winning short films.

In 1999 Kieran and his colleagues at Blue-Tongue were flown to Los Angeles (courtesy of Fox-Searchlight), for a screening of 'Loaded' as part of the first annual American Cinemateque 'Shorts Downunder' program. Fourteen films were screened that year to major American industry representatives as a showcase of emerging Australian filmmaking talent. Kieran's next film, 'The Island', was selected and screened the following year.

Blue-Tongue Films are now one of the most keenly watched group of emerging filmmakers in Australia. Three of only five Australian short films selected to screen in competition at Sundance in 2008 were produced with significant Blue-Tongue creative involvement (in writing, direction, production, editing and performance). The first Blue-Tongue feature, 'The Square', (directed by Nash Edgerton and written by Joel Edgerton), is currently in cinemas nationally. Our web-site: www.bluetonguefilms.com.

Ladies & Gentlemen - we are proud to present the following short films  |  session times here

'The Homebake 2008 Cinema Pavilion promises to be the most exciting exhibition of Australian and New Zealand filmmaking talent we've ever put together. The Homebake Cinema has always been about honouring a charter of recognising and promoting fresh local talent and placing it all before a huge audience.

We like to think we're doing our bit for the Australian film industry and, in particular, for those on the up and up. Over the years we've had short films from filmmakers who have gone on to establish themselves as prominent and highly successful feature feature film directors, both here and overseas.

The Homebake Cinema Pavilion, unlike the major competitive film Festivals in Australia, is not an Awards-based festival with a first run eligibility criteria - it is simply a showcase of the most exciting work out there, the best of the best, and, as such, we are able to access films that have already taken Awards at many of the most prestigious Festivals both locally and around the world.

This year's program includes films which have taken, or been nominated for, major Awards at Cannes, Sundance, Berlin, Clermont Ferrance, The Academy Awards, Sydney and Melbourne International Film Festivals; London, Chicago, Venice, Toronto, the list goes on and on..

Every film selected is a standout for one reason or another - and we take enormous care and pride in the selection process. We're particularly excited this year to be including two very exciting films from New Zealand - the Oscar nominated 'Two Cars, One Night' by Taika Waititiand the Cannes selected 'Natures Way' by director Jane Shearer. For a full list of films and filmmakers, see below..

Most excitingly, The Homebake Cinema Pavilion (formerly the Homebake Cinema Tent) has this year relocated to the grand interior of the Pavilion on the Park. With extra screens, extra seating and a much larger set up than we've ever had - 2008 promises to be our best year yet.' Kieran Darcy Smith
